With a food allergy, the immune system produces antibodies to the protein in the food. The antibodies cause certain cells in the body to release histamines into the bloodstream. Histamine acts on a person’s skin, nose, eyes, throat, and/or GI tract causing allergic symptoms such as a rash, itchy eyes, runny nose and/or diarrhea. This is why antihistamines are usually recommended for allergies to grasses, pollen, cat dander and other allergy causing items in the environment.

Lower Transportation Costs: Liquid products such as PediaSure® and Boost Kid Essentials® contain a great deal of water putting them at an environmental disadvantage to powdered products. For example, a 12.7 ounce canister of PediaSmart® is nutritionally equivalent (when mixed with water) to 56 fl oz of the leading nutritional supplements.Our small 12.7 ounce can of Baby’s Only Organic® powdered formula reconstitutes to 80 fl oz. Imagine the increase in cost to ship these types of products from factory to distribution outlets to stores, on an ounce per ounce basis. It obviously costs much more to ship a liquid product because more trucks are needed and more gasoline is used, which also increases gas emissions.
Less Packaging Costs: Liquid products clearly use more packaging material compared to powdered products. Consumers pay a significant amount of money on packaging; this adds to transportation costs and ultimately results in increased waste trucked to landfills. A single Nature’s One® powdered canister is equivalent to 7 PediaSure® bottles or 2 ½ large jugs of Similac® ready-to-feed. We use composite canisters, which is good for the environment. They are recyclable and on average contain 50% recycled content, 35% of which is post-consumer recycled materials. Composite cans are light weight because they are made of paperboard instead of tin. This reduces environmental waste and energy used in manufacturing and transportation.
