The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals invalidates key portions of Ohio Dept. of Agriculture rule and protects consumers' and producers' rights to truthful information on organic product labels.

The United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit today ruled in favor of the Organic Trade Association (OTA) in a landmark case that would have prevented consumers in Ohio from knowing whether products on grocery store shelves were produced without synthetic growth hormones.

Abbott Recalls Similac Baby Powder

 

"Abbott Laboratories is recalling about five million containers of Similac powdered baby formula as the company learned that beetles or their larvae could be in the product.

 

The recall comes after an internal quality review found the "remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in one production area" at its Sturgis, Mich., plant.

 

The maker of drugs and medical devices said the recall won't hurt earnings guidance for the rest of the year. Abbott, though, will record about $100 million of sales returns for the third quarter. The top line is expected to approach $9 billion for the period.

 

The recalled product was sold in the U.S., Guam and various locales in the Caribbean. Consumers can go to similac.com/recall for more information or call 1-800-986-8850."

The High Cost of the American Diet

The House food safety bill passed last year (HR 2749) included several measures that threaten small-scale organic producers, including a registration fee of $500 and blanket application of complicated monitoring and traceability standards — regardless of one’s farm size.

There’s no doubt that industrial agriculture needs better oversight. But, family-scale local and organic farms are probably the safest in the nation –they are part of the solution, not part of the problem — and need to be protected!

Now is your chance, as a supporter of sustainable family farming, to help fix these problems! Senator John Tester (D-MT), a certified organic farmer himself, is proposing an amendment to S. 510 that would exempt small-scale farmers and food processors from the most burdensome regulations.
